We've said it before and we will say it every time we have an older pup in our care.
SENIORS DO NOT BELONG IN THE SHELTER.
Sure, they are out of the elements and fed. It could be worse....
But, Old Nelson says it sure could be a lot better.
This
sweet old man is Nelson. He is about 10 years old and came in as a stray and never reclaimed. Chances are, he was a discarded hunting dog who wore out his welcome when his arthritis made it harder to run and track. Or, his failing vision didn't alert his hunter as well as he once did.
Nelson clearly has more than a few miles on him, and his eyes show a sadness that seems to say that he knows that he has worked so hard for so long, and that he should be enjoying retirement on a soft bed in front of a wood stove. He is probably wondering what he did wrong, other than get old.
The shelter floors are concrete, which is tough on this old guy's bones. He's warm, dry, and fed...but he deserves to be LOVED. We don't think he has ever known the love of a family, and it would sure be nice if this old working dog was given the retirement he deserves!
Nelson has some lumps and bumps that need to get checked out, he has achy joints, and his eyes are cloudy, so we have a vet visit scheduled for him on Thursday. We will have his blood work checked, along with getting his tired body checked out in hopes of making him more comfortable.
Any donations towards Nelson's veterinary care are greatly appreciated...we are hoping for great blood work and a clean bill of health, but we are also prepared to do whatever it takes to help this boy with any pressing medical needs.
